Columbus just changed its rules. As of June 1, 2026, golf carts and UTVs are allowed on residential city streets for the first time — provided they meet the requirements the city laid out. Before that, they were prohibited on public roads here entirely.
That’s a big deal, and it means a lot of people in Columbus are suddenly looking at golf carts seriously for the first time. Careful with used carts right now. With the ordinance freshly in effect, there are a lot of carts changing hands in Columbus that don’t have seat belts, turn signals, or an SMV emblem. Bring it to us and we’ll tell you honestly what it’s missing and what it’ll cost to fix.

That’s a longer list than a standard golf cart comes with. A cart bought off a marketplace listing almost certainly won’t have all of it.
The city has published a map showing exactly where carts and UTVs aren’t allowed. Look at it before your first drive.
$150 for a first offense. $200 for a second. $300 for a third — plus possible impoundment and a potential permanent ban on operating a cart or UTV on city streets. Columbus PD has said officers are up to speed on the ordinance and ready to enforce it.
Bartholomew County passed its own separate ordinance, effective August 2025, which allows golf carts on internal neighborhood roads within unincorporated Bartholomew County. It does not apply to Columbus city streets or state highways, and it doesn’t cover incorporated towns like Hartsville, Elizabethtown, or Jonesville unless those towns pass their own rules. City and county are two different rulebooks — know which one you’re under.

Columbus is a town people move around in. It’s compact, it’s well laid out, and the residential streets are calm — which is exactly what the new ordinance was written for. Mayor and council spent a long time on it, and what came out is a fairly careful set of rules: keep it slow, keep it on the neighborhood streets, stay off the trails and the highways, and everyone gets along.
For a lot of families here, that’s all they wanted. A quiet electric cart to take the kids a few blocks, get to a neighbor’s, run to the park, drive to a friend’s house on a summer evening. It’s cheaper than a second car and considerably more pleasant to sit in.
The one thing worth saying plainly: the equipment requirements are real, and the fines are real. Buy the right cart, set it up properly, and Columbus is a genuinely great place to own one.

Central Avenue for its entire length in the city, 25th Street between Washington Street and U.S. 31, Washington Street between 11th and 25th Streets, and Goeller Boulevard between State Road 46 and the west entrance to Tipton Lakes Boulevard. All state roads and highways are also off-limits, including 2nd and 3rd Streets. The city publishes a map — look at it.
